Admiral Richard H. Leigh Papers, 1870-1944

This collection consists of the papers of United States Navy Admiral Richard H. Leigh. They include a 17-volume holograph diary, dating 1917-1944, containing official orders, holograph and typed letters, newspaper clippings, printed programs, maps, pictures, and other related items. Also included is a four volume set of personal papers, and a book which Leigh entitled, Whereas, which consists of newspaper clippings, family pictures, programs, doctor bills, and other materials. Many of these documents relate to the history and development of the United States Navy, World War I, and events leading to the conflict with Japan and World War II. Other subjects covered by this collection includes: United States, England, Ireland, France, Navy life at sea, California, New York, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park, Orlando, San Diego, Claremont, California, submarine chasers, detection devices, Siwash Indians, USS Oregon, map of Pacific Islands, Franklin Delano Roosevelt photograph, Honolulu, San Francisco, and naval training.

Brumby Family Papers, 1882-1949

The Brumby Family Papers consist of newspaper clippings, biographies, and a diary related to the Brumby Family as well as information on the Brumby Rocker, a rocking chair produced by the Brumby Chair Company. The diary entitled, "Diary of Our Florida Trip From Marietta, GA" covers a camping trip of the Family by mule drawn wagon through Florida in the Winter of 1884-85. There are four newspaper clippings about James R. Brumby, Jr. dated 1917-1921 and a copy of an editorial about him dated 1929. A biography of "My Brother Jim," about James R. Brumby, Jr., which was written by his sister Isabel Brumby Patton. Also included in the papers is an information file on the Brumby Rocker.

Captain Hugh Black Papers, 1840-1913

The papers include letters and one diary written during the Civil War (1863-1864) by Black to his wife, Mary Ann Black, from various places in Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia and contain descriptions of army life and of the battlefields. There is also a series of letters and accounts (1901-1913) between Black and a Tallahassee merchant, Julius Diamond, two land deeds (1857-1858) relating to land of the Forbes' Purchases, and a letter to Black from J.B. Whitfield, Treasurer of the State of Florida and later a Supreme Court Justice. Additional materials consist of correspondence between Captain Hugh Black and his family between 1862-1864, as well as 2 photographs of Black reprinted from a photograph from 1862 and typed transcripts of letters from this collection. These letters are included in Letters of Captain Black to his family in Florida during the War Between the States, 1862-1864, compiled by Elizabeth Coldwell Frano. The book is housed in the FSU Libraries, and the call number is Fla E 467.1 .B62 A4 1998. MSS 98-3 is also included in this finding aid.

Erasmus H. Tomlinson Papers, 1893-1958, bulk 1906-1944

The collection consists of materials of the E.H. Tomlinson and Son Real Estate Company from 1893-1958. The series include client records, correspondence, day books, maps, blueprints, and scrapbooks. Contained in these series are family correspondence, financial records, legal documents, deeds, contracts, reports, photographs, newspaper clippings, postcards, and pamphlets. The collection documents the activities of the E.H. Tomlinson and Son Real Estate Company during the last decade of the Nineteenth Century and the first half of the Twentieth Century. The collection contains considerable business and family correspondence that gives a first hand account of Florida real estate activities in the first half of the Twentieth Century. Missing from the collection is any documentation relating to how and why the company started and what became of E.D. Tomlinson, his daughter, and the company.

Frank Hatheway Papers, 1845-1853

This collection consists of a diary of G. Frank Hatheway regarding his life and work, as well as examples of poetry, and a funeral announcement for his daughter, Julia. A scrapbook kept by Hatheway (originally MSS 0-138) is also part of the collection. The scrapbook contains a collection of poetry, clippings of historical interest, old prints, and pictures. The poetry is a mix of poetry Hatheway copied and original compisitions. A page of music in manuscript form, The Indian Maid, may be an original composition as well.

Goulding Family Collection, 1830-1967

Manuscripts, typescripts, diaries, photo albums, and government documents related to Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Goulding of Tallahassee, Florida and their ancestors, including materials on the American Civil War, Key West (1830-1863), rationing during World War II, YMCA activities during and after World War I, Florida bank notes (1860, 1870), and souvenir photo albums and guidebooks from global tourist destinations (1905-1911). This collection includes materials previously described as MSS 0-127. Restrictions on Use: Manuscript diary pages in Boxes 171B and 171C are fragile and not available to researchers without permission of the Manuscript and Instruction Archivist or the Associate Dean for Special Collections and Archives.  Reference copies can be found in Box 171A or on microfilm (FILM 9652) in the Scholars Commons, Strozier Library, Florida State University.
