Bird and Ulmer Papers, 1851-1922

The Bird and Ulmer papers consist of photocopies of correspondence, land deeds, tax papers, political and other speeches, resolutions, and papers pertaining to church, lodges, last will, accounts of executors of estates, reports of estate, division of land, and division of slaves with values assigned. These papers pertain chiefly to the plantations of Bunker Hill, Nacossa, and Freelawn, which flourished before the Civil War. The majority of the papers are dated from the 1850s through the late 1800s, although a handful are from the 1920s. Also known as MSS 0-20.

Dr. Edward Bradford Papers, 1830-1871

Contains personal and business correspondence, documents, bills, receipts, etc., of Dr. Edward Bradford, general merchant and plantation owner. Collection also includes a letter of introduction of James E. Broome, Tallahassee, Fla., to Hon. Jacob Thompson, Washington City, and a long handwritten letter of Governor Bragg, Raleigh, N.C., and other important papers show that Dr. Bradford was a well-known and prominent citizen.

Dr. F. A. Byrd Papers, 1819-1892

Personal, family, and business correspondence, land deeds, letter of testamentary, papers of the administrator of the estate of Dr. F.A. Byrd. Business and personal papers, certificates of membership, licenses to practice as Physician and Surgeon, 13 early envelopes (some with stamps attached); business correspondence, statements, invoices, and one bound account book. Orders and invoices for marble slabs and headstones for family graves (with names, etc.); declaration of taxable property, tax receipts, note payable to Harrison Reed, Governor of Florida; certificate of "Amnesty Oath;" codicil to a Last Will, letter testamentary. Sales of land, land deeds, bill of sale, sales of land at public auction, contacts; sales of enslaved persons, custodianship of black children, etc. Civil War letters, charter of Home Guard organization with list of names of volunteers; "Hints for the consideration of White Men," (relates to problems with slaves) etc. Florida politics, including one newspaper clipping. Family correspondence (one letter pertains to yellow fever in Florida, one to travel by vessel from St. Marks to New Orleans, and one to early development of St. Teresa); philosophy, poetry, and a recipe for making "Hard Soap." Thirty seven items in poor condition have been photocopied for use to preserve the originals. Also known as MSS 0-42.

The collection consists of materials of the E.H. Tomlinson and Son Real Estate Company from 1893-1958. The series include client records, correspondence, day books, maps, blueprints, and scrapbooks. Contained in these series are family correspondence, financial records, legal documents, deeds, contracts, reports, photographs, newspaper clippings, postcards, and pamphlets. The collection documents the activities of the E.H. Tomlinson and Son Real Estate Company during the last decade of the Nineteenth Century and the first half of the Twentieth Century. The collection contains considerable business and family correspondence that gives a first hand account of Florida real estate activities in the first half of the Twentieth Century. Missing from the collection is any documentation relating to how and why the company started and what became of E.D. Tomlinson, his daughter, and the company.
