Allen Morris Papers, 1861-1970

The Allen Morris Papers consist of personal and professional records and research materials accumulated by Mr. Morris over a period of about forty-one years. The papers consist of correspondence; biographical sketches of Florida officials and other famous Floridians; photographs, programs, and other materials related to the Allen Morris Legislative Awards; historical data concerning place names, historical houses, rivers and river boats. Also included is a complete file of "Cracker Politics," the column that Allen Morris was responsible for writing for so many years, as well as notes and materials compiled and used in the creation of the Florida Handbook. A large portion of the collection is made up of papers, letters, and notes relating to important figures such as governors, state legislators and other Florida politicians. Also included are books and manuscripts written by Allen Morris and books and pamphlets written by others. Includes MSS 75-11.

Augustus B. Turnbull Papers, 1971-1990

This collection contains a variety of materials about the life and career of Augustus B. Turnbull III. Subjects covered by these materials include: Tallahassee, bicycling, conservation, land use, Lake Bradford, public opinion, schools, citizens, housing, drainage, sewers, traffic, Florida, Society of Civil Engineers, Council of Neighborhood Associations, parks and recreation, town meetings, transportation, Florida State University, Charles Joe Carter, and a White House luncheon menu. There are also a series of photographs: Switzerland, Augustus Turnbull, President John F. Kennedy, George Smathers, Marjorie Turnbull, and others. As well, there are 24 blueprints, showing geographical area in Leon County.

Ben C. Willis Addresses and Article, 1972, 1986

Addresses delivered by former Florida Circuit Judge Ben C. Willis and an article written by Willis for the Florida Heritage Foundation News and Views. These materials are useful to researchers studying Tallahassee life during the 1930s. According to Lee Willis, these addresses were probably given at the Exchange Club in Tallahassee, which met at the Cherokee Hotel until it closed. Includes MSS 2008-021.

A large part of this collection concerns former Florida Governor Spessard Holland as well as the Florida State College for Women (FSCW) and The Florida State University (FSU). Included in the papers are correspondence about Governor Holland, the FSU Alumni Association, and Alpha Delta Pi. Also includes photographs and memorabilia concerning Governor Holland, Beth Moor, and both FSCW and FSU.

Eddie Barrington transcript, 1920-2004, bulk 1941-1956

This oral history interview transcript relates to Eddie Barrington who served with C Company in the 823rd Air Aviation Engineers. Barrington was assigned to work on the Ledo Road under General Joseph Stilwell in December 1942 in the China Burma India campaign. The collection includes a transcript of an interview, recorded May 20, 2004 and audio recording. The recording includes portions of the interview that are not transcribed.

The collection relates to the El Destino and Chemonie plantations located a short distance from Tallahassee, Florida. These papers consist of records and documents of the executors and administrators of the estate of William B. Nuttall. The materials discuss sale of cotton and other agricultural products, conveyance of land and slaves, as well as reports and accounts related to the estate. Some papers are signed by Mary W. Savage (Nuttall), Hector W. Braden and George Noble Jones.

Frank Hatheway Papers, 1845-1853

This collection consists of a diary of G. Frank Hatheway regarding his life and work, as well as examples of poetry, and a funeral announcement for his daughter, Julia. A scrapbook kept by Hatheway (originally MSS 0-138) is also part of the collection. The scrapbook contains a collection of poetry, clippings of historical interest, old prints, and pictures. The poetry is a mix of poetry Hatheway copied and original compisitions. A page of music in manuscript form, The Indian Maid, may be an original composition as well.

Also included in the collection are the official programs of the inaugurations of five Florida governors, miscellaneous publications, and typescripts of manuscripts published in issues of "Tallahassee Historical Society Annual."
