Arthur N. Sollee Papers, 1927-1984

As Director of the Jacksonville Expressway Authority during the pivotal transportation years of 1956-1972, Mr. Sollee was a major influence in the development of the Jacksonville, Florida road system in Duval County, Florida in the mid-twentieth century. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, subject files and reports, and newspaper clippings relating to transportation projects in Duval County. It includes extensive documentation on the development of Jacksonville's road system, circa 1950-1970, consisting chiefly of numerous, albeit irregular, primary reports / studies; beach erosion / bulkhead data; and personal notes on Jacksonville transportation issues from the perspective of a prime participant. Historical source documents include project files relating to plans for Metropolitan Park and the Duval County Courthouse, and correspondence / newspaper clippings relating to the University of North Florida site selection. Few personal items are included.

The collection contains correspondence, subject files, and campaign and printed materials relating to Humphries' political activities, chiefly his tenure on the Jacksonville City Council from 1967-1971. The core of the collection are newspaper clippings pertaining to the Council's activities under the new consolidated government. Additional printed materials provide documentation on the site selection of the University of North Florida in 1969.

Jacksonville, Florida, Government Consolidation Collection, 1968-2008

On October 1, 1968, the governments of the city of Jacksonville, Florida and Duval County merged into one unified and consolidated government. The collection contains newspaper clippings which provide insight, commentary, and documentation on this transformative era in Jacksonville history. Special Florida Times-Union newspaper supplements from October 1, 1968, and October 1, 1969, provide extensive details on the history and background of the governmental merger. Additional newsclippings marking the consolidation anniversaries of 1993 and 2008 update the changes and developments attributed to consolidation in the intervening years.

Joe Carlucci Collection, 1911-1986, bulk 1968-1978

The collection contains correspondence, administrative and subject files, and printed materials relating to Mr. Carlucci's political activities. Few personal items are included. Subject files provide detailed information on highly publicized and controversial Jacksonville, Florida issues (Offshore Power Systems, etc.) and prominent local individuals; extensive documentation on the site selection of the University of North Florida; and insights into the Hans Tanzler mayoral era of Jacksonville politics and government. The Carlucci Papers complement related collections on Jacksonville's government consolidation during the same time period: Richard A. Martin Papers; Homer H. John E. Mathews, Jr., Collection, 1900-1988, bulk 1956-1970

John E. Mathews, Jr. was a Florida state legislator from 1956 to 1970 and President of the Florida Senate in 1969-70. He ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Florida in 1963/64 and 1969/70. The collection contains the extensive personal papers, documents, and memorabilia of Mr. Mathews, spanning the years 1920 - 1988. His early years are particularly well documented, with scrapbooks, report cards, awards, etc. The legislative years (1956-70) are chronicled by detailed reports, documents, and newsclippings; and the gubernatorial campaign years (1963; 1969-70) are well-represented with a near complete set of the master campaign files of correspondence, lists, speeches, newsclippings, scrapbooks, and travel / itinerary materials. The collection is of primary value for research on Mr. Mathews, but in totality, provides insights into Florida political history and government circa 1950-70.

Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville Collection, 1977-2010

The Library's collection contains printed materials which provide documentation of the Museum's exhibitions and programs from the late 1970s to date. Types of items include gallery guides and rack cards, exhibition catalogs, invitations and publicity brochures, exhibition and text boards, and posters published by the Museum. Of particular interest are guides, catalogs, publicity and memorabilia from the Ramses II exhibition presented by the Jacksonville Art Museum in 1986-87, the Andrew Wyeth exhibition in 1992, and large scale posters from other notable art exhibitions.

Nathaniel Glover, Jr. Papers, 1970-2009, bulk 1995-2003

The collection contains correspondence, personal and subject files, and campaign and printed materials relating to Glover's career, chiefly his election and tenure as Jacksonville Sheriff from 1995 to 2003. The core of the collection are printed materials pertaining to his campaigns for Jacksonville Sheriff (1995; 1999) and Mayor (2003), and photographs showing highlights from his JSO years. The images provide visual documentation of his extensive involvement in the community, through neighborhood walks, speaking engagements at local schools, and attendance at numerous ceremonies, events and receptions.

The Records consist of the official minutes, with attachments, of the meetings of the Academic Council from 1970-1978. Attachments include correspondence, memoranda, plans, statistical charts, and reports. Topics covered in the meetings are: academic programs, policies and procedures; major unit philosophies and objectives; responsibilities of academic officers; accreditation plans; admissions policies; enrollment projections and statistics; faculty and staffing plans; fiscal concerns and budgets; and library development. The Records are significant for researchers because they provide documentation of the initial organization and development of the academic structure of the University from its inception during its formative decade, and show early decisions and input made by charter university leaders.

The Commencement Records consist of printed materials, memorabilia, and regalia dating from the University's first commencement (June 10, 1973) to the most recent commencement. The files include the addresses and remarks of commencement speakers, commencement announcements and invitations, memoranda relating to commencement planning and organization, programs, and scripts of ceremonies. At least two copies of each commencement program is held in each file. Memorabilia and regalia include the first ceremonial mace, caps and tassels from early commencements, and a graduation gown worn by a student at the charter class commencement ceremony on June 12, 1974.
