- Biographical / Historical:
The Jacksonville Port Authority (JPA) was created in 1963 by the Florida Legislature to own and manage Jacksonville's public ship docks and terminals. In 1968, as part of the government consolidation of the City of Jacksonville and Duval County, the county's airports (Jacksonville International Airport, Craig, and Herlong Airports) also were placed under JPA's control. By October 2001, the Authority's marine and aviation operations were divided into two separate authorities: the Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA) was created to manage the city's airports, and the Jacksonville Seaport Authority was formed to manage the maritime facilities. The Seaport Authority (doing business as the Jacksonville Port Authority) retained the brand name JAXPORT. In 2003, a legislative bill was passed to officially reinstate the name Jacksonville Port Authority instead of Seaport.
