Administrative, legal and subject files and printed materials relating to Jacksonville-Duval County, Florida government consolidation. The consolidation materials span the years 1963-1993, with the bulk of the items concentrated in the transitional consolidation years of 1967-70. Newspaper clippings and printed materials form the majority of the collection. Few personal items are included. Resources include primary reports and speeches from prominent elected officials; an extensive group of editorials and daily newspaper articles (many written by Mr. Martin) exploring the numerous issues arising from merging the Jacksonville - Duval County governments; and insights into the Hans Tanzler era of Jacksonville mayoral history. Richard A. Martin was a journalist, educator, historian and author. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927. Graduated from University of Florida, Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education. Teacher, Ocala, Florida public schools, 1955. Reporter, columnist and editor with The Florida Times-Union and the Jacksonville Journal, 1956-67. Head, Department of Educational Services and Historical Research, Silver Springs Inc., 1966-67. Chief of Public Relations Division, City of Jacksonville, 1968-70. Free lance writer, 1970-. Also, Creative Director/Partner, Radcliffe Advertising Agency, Jacksonville, Florida, 1978-85. Research and Development Specialist, Division of Convention Support Services, City of Jacksonville, Florida, 1985-. Author of numerous articles and publications on Jacksonville and Florida history. Pulitzer Prize nomination, 1959 and 1968. Winner of Arthur W. Thompson Memorial Prize in Florida History, 1975. Died on March 27, 2003.
