Scope and Contents
This collection relates to Mark C. Bane Jr. who joined the National Guard in May 1941. He later volunteered for the 501st Parachute Battalion and was sent to Montgomery, Alabama to train at the Maxwell Air Force Base. While at Maxwell Air Force Base, he trained British cadets under the Arnold Plan. In late 1945, Bane traveled overseas with General Douglas MacArthur. The collection consists of an oral history transcript.

Biographical or Historical Information
Mark C. Bane Jr. was born on October 11, 1913, in Pulaski, Virginia. Bane attended Fishburne Military School at Waynesboro, VA from 1927 to 1931. He then attended Virginia Military Institute from 1931 to 1933. Bane joined the National Guard in May of 1941. During the same period, he was employed as an engineer on the Skyline Drive project in Virginia.
Bane later volunteered for the 501st Parachute Battalion and was sent to Montgomery, Alabama to train at the Maxwell Air Force Base. While at Maxwell Air Force Base, he trained British cadets under the Arnold Plan. It was not until late 1945, after Japan surrendered, that Bane traveled overseas with General MacArthur to survey homes for dependants. Bane's final station was at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia where he was chief of staff to the Continental Air Command. After serving 30 years in the United States Air Force, Bane retired in 1968. He died September 27, 2008.
